After spending long hours in the confines of their air-conditioned cabins, a number of young men and women sweat it out during the weekends in farm lands in the vicinity of the city.

These young professionals turn volunteers as part of The Weekend Agriculturist, helping poor farmers in their land. The Weekend Agriculturist has been sending out these ‘farm hands’ to the city outskirts of Kancheepuram and Thiruvallur districts and even as far as Tindivanam.

Sunny a member of initiative, said the volunteer group was stared by Harish Srinivasan, an IT professional, and Tamil Selvan, mechanical engineer, to help people gain knowledge about farming.

The group, which is going to be involved with Daan Utsav, goes to fields and engage in sowing, weeding and harvesting every weekend. Sunny, who was working in a private company, after learning farming activities, has also leased a six-acre land for undertaking farming with a group of friends.

The group that attracts volunteers through word of mouth, networking through friends and event-based programmes, is sought after by corporate firms for sending their employees to farmlands for its team-building activities and as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility activities. Sunny says the group has become well acquainted with some farmers who have invited them for temple festivals and social functions near a village in Thiruninravur.
